2006 Summer Camps

Teen Residential Session

June 29-July 8

Val Mindel, Carl Linich, Amity Baker

Photo of Residential Session in Concert

This camp is especially for teenaged singers new to Village Harmony and for those who can’t commit three weeks to a traveling camp. Val will teach a mix of Appalachian harmony songs, gospel quartets and blues trios, and lead instrumentalists in string band music; this is a great session for fiddlers and guitar players! Carl will coach students in the stunning and often complex harmonies of Georgian folk and sacred music, and Amity will lead a set of Spanish renaissance works, shape-note songs and contemporary pieces.

These residential sessions in the past have been particularly joyous. Each session has produced a dynamic group of singers that have presented very strong concerts. We will do three concerts at the end of the session, with one a collaboration with the overlapping traveling Village Harmony Session I camp.

There will be one end-of-camp over-night home stay before our final concert

The Roundhouse

The Roundhouse

This marvelous facility was purpose-built as a retreat center by the owner, story-teller Bekki Tippens. The 14-sided building is filled with ingenious and fanciful detail work. The main room is round, a fabulous singing space with an encircling balcony and 3-story domed ceiling and ample nooks and corners for reading, relaxing and socializing. The majority of the beds are in small sleeping cubbies resembling ships’ berths, radiating off a second floor circular hallway. There are also a number of private sleeping rooms, both in the house and in the adjacent small cottage, plus tent space on the land. Bekki is a gracious host and will help plan menus and help out in the kitchen.
